So its Saturday in SOMA after this morning's rain and waiting on the second round of showers later today, and I just sold my favorite picture here on 10th Street, and sent it to a nice home in Noe Valley with a couple Hillary Williams prints we framed. I'll miss the "Asian Still Life" by C. Chandler Ross. I think I was secretly hoping it wouldn't sell and then I would buy it and take it home. It had a beautiful bamboo moulding and a fabric wrapped mat on it. It greeted me everyday, and was a personal highlight on the wall, but with the big sale we're having through Christmas (20% off all pre-framed non-original art and mirrors), I expect I'll be sayng goodbye to a lot more of my little kiddies.
It's nice to think of them hanging in a new home though. That is the point! Can't help but have a little separation anxiety.
Got all the Holiday decor up and trying to hold back until Monday before I start jamming the Christmas music. Plenty of stuff for home and office this year. I have spent the last few weeks collecting all sorts of stuff for any budget, so come check it out!
----Have a good weekend all- Derek

Have you heard of Caine's Arcade?
Here's the link to the Facebook Page. If anything deserves a "Like"-ing, it's Caine's Arcade. What a cool kid!
Recently we framed a pair of Caine's Arcade Fun Passes. The gentleman who brought them in got them at the Exploratorium, where Caine's Arcade traveled for a short visit to San Francisco.
Caine was discovered by a random customer to his father's auto parts store in East Los Angeles. The customer was moved by Caine's creativity to create a short film. Watch it here on YouTube.
Learn about him. He's an inspiration!

One of the greatest privileges we enjoy is being welcomed by artists in their studios. I'd like to thank Michael V. Rios for his generous spirit in welcoming me to his new studio on Sunday. We've recently completed a framing order for Mr. Rios, of 19 original paintings on paper.
Michael's a real gentleman and has a new space out near the Noonan building. He converted what was once a storage shed into a beautiful, light and airy painting studio. Another artist is converting another shed into what will become an etching studio.
You can learn more about Michael V. Rios on his website. He's well known for his cover art for Carlos Santana's album covers, with a slightly-psychedelic twist on his personal brand of visual vocabulary, which I can only describe as between surrealism, psychedelia, and organic abstraction. Oh yes: and one key word comes to mind: neon. Michael Rios's paintings have a particularly neon quality about them.
Recently he's taking a lot of inspiration from his new bayside setting, painting a lot of ships and boats in the San Francisco Bay. He also is continuing work on a series of pieces in which boats represent transition, with the subjects riding aboard the boats, which resemble what we might think of as "arks". Great stuff! If you're interested in seeing more work by Michael, be sure to pay him a visit during Open Studios.
Thanks again, Michael!

Market and 10th Streets, San Francisco
Artists Rendering of what the new Crescent Heights development will look like.
The building is built in four sections:
19-storey tower down 10th Street
9-storey element connecting the two high-rise elements
38-storey main tower close to Market & 10th Sts.
11 or 12-storey element on Market Street.
Residential towers with commercial spaces on the ground level. 10th Street and Market are about to get a lot more lively!

10th Street, 10 Years Ago:
A sad, dejected 24-hour King's Diner sat on the corner of 10th and Mission, between Market and Mission.
Across 10th Street, and behind the diner, sat two parking lots.
On the corner of 10th and Market, a vacant lot sat across the street from the SF Mart, a trade-only wholesale furniture market.
10th Street, today:
Mercy Housing sits on the corner of 10th and Mission, with hundreds of below-market-rate family housing units upstairs in a 12-floor high-rise. Sumitra Salon, Back to the Picture/SoMa, and Cumaica Coffee occupy the ground-floor retail spaces.
Crescent Heights is developing the lot on Market and Mission, with a development including a 19-floor tower and a 38-floor tower, which will eventually contain over 750 market rate units, and retail spaces on the ground floor.
The wholesale furniture SFMart has been occupied by Twitter, with hundreds of tech employees now working in the building.
This once-empty street will, upon completion of the residential skyscrapers, now be home to over 15 businesses and thousands of residents.
A lot changes in 10 years! We're happy to be part of the revival of this new corridor which will be called New Market.

Our regular website at www.backtothepicture.com has been acting funky lately. We talked to the web man, and he says we'll have to update our version at a large cost to repair the errors...but then we'll still have that website which isn't e-commerce capable.
We're investigating creating a new site. Bear with us while we do so...we should be introducing our brand-new site within the month of June!

As Gracias Madre...Mercado Sin Fronteras winds down, Back to the Picture wishes to express its deep gratitude to those who made it possible:
Maria V. Pinedo has curated many exhibitions in our gallery since 2006. Maria is one of the leaders in the Bay Area for the Mata Ortíz pottery movement. Her exhibits have featured Mata Ortíz pottery, the artwork of Adalberto Pérez Meillón, which is inspired by this pottery movement, and Bay Area artists. Although this ceramics movement is more commonly seen in Southern California, Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas, it had been largely unseen by Bay Area audiences until Maria brought work to Back to the Picture, and the San Francisco Museum of Craft and Folk Art. Bravo Maria! We're hooked!
Steve Thompson & Louis Rodriguez of DeSilva Imports, who have returned to Back to the Picture for the second time with Gracias Madre...Mercado Sin Fronteras, make incredible sacrifices to import items from all over México, and then install and man the exhibit and sale. With a successful existing online business at www.desilvaimports.com, they've begun bringing their merchandise and setting up in physical locations such as ours. Steve is a fountain of knowledge with regard to contemporary and folk arts from throughout México and maintains close friendships with the artisan families that produce the work. Thank you Steve and Louis!
Vita Paramo, Maria's daughter, is ever at her mother's side while we install, host Opening Receptions, run, and disassemble Maria's exhibitions at Back to the Picture Latin American Gallery. Vita is one of the best preparators and facilitators that we know, having grown up in the Mission and helping Maria when she was with Galería de la Raza. Vita, you are a part of our family. We thank you for all your dedication and hard work!
Juan R. Fuentes, Ester Hernandez, and Emmanuel C. Montoya, dear friends and world-class artists: thank you for exhibiting in Gracias Madre...Mercado Sin Fronteras! Your work continues to awe and inspire us.
La Familia Peña Govea, for giving us a reason to dance at the Opening Reception...you have the gift of music, and you share it liberally. Thank you Miguel and Susan!
And always...
All the members of our community who come to our events and make purchases in support of the arts...we salute you!

Thriving Resilience
...Life Through Positive Eyes
Thriving Resilience features works by seven Bay Area artists living with HIV/AIDS. Curated to include artwork by people who are thriving, despite their positive diagnosis. Meant to be a beacon of hope to those who are newly diagnosed, those who suffer with depression regarding their status, or just anyone who wants to see a positive, uplifting exhibit, we invite you to dig deep, find your inner unabashed joy, and witness how an HIV positive life can be resilient and positive!
This is my co-worker Derek Hargrove's curatorial debut, and he's selected pieces that feature primarily jewel-tones. Our SoMa location is a smaller, more boutique-style business, with framing on the right and gallery walls on the left, so come check out Thriving Resilience!

Hi Everybody! This is Derek at the SOMA location giving you a little update on what's going on! So the opening of Thriving Resilience was a big success! The work will be exhibiting throughout the month of April, so there's still time to see it and take some of it home for your own house.
Also, for the Spring we are giving 30% off all custom framing, ready made frames, decorator art, and framed beveled mirrors, (this excludes original & consignment artwork unfortunately). So come on by and see me. 30% off is a big chunk so now's the time to take advantage of it.
Over at the mothership, (our store on Valencia), Gracias Madre...Mercado Sin Fronteras opens on April 28th in time for Mother's Day on May 6th, and runs until May 13th. Our gallery turns into a market of Mexican Folk Art, jewelry, pottery, textiles & rugs, ceramics, and art work from 3 local Bay Area artists. The opening reception for this Mother's Day Extravaganza is May 5th, from 7-9 pm. So join us over their for music, dancing and treats at the market!
That's about it for now, need to stop blogging and start framing, these pictures aren't going to frame themselves! See you later!

Opening Reception Tonight!
So this is Derek at the SOMA location and I am trying to stay busy getting the gallery ready for the big opening tonight of "Thriving Resilience....Life Through Positive Eyes"
Randy and I installed all the art work earlier this week so all that's left really is the nitty gritty- clean the bathroom, sweep the floor, organize stuff that should have never been unorganized! Papers and stuff....
Here's the announcement card:
Looks like we are expecting a good amount of people so this should be fun and hopefully we'll raise some money for the AIDS Emergency Fund at the same time.
See ya tonight!!!

Custom framers with a passion for art, who exhibit local artists in our onsite galleries. We're a San Francisco company, a family business, and the dream of an entrepreneur. We've been in business since 1985.
